Jet Movements, Part 2

They Shoot Airliners, Don't They?

Not if they are in Germany. A German high court has ruled that the nation's military cannot shoot down a hijacked aircraft as matter of last resort even if the jet poses a significant safety hazard to others. A previously enacted law, now struck down, would have allowed the German military to shoot down an aircraft with passengers and crew onboard. Now, the government can only take action if the jet is unmanned or being flown by terrorists exclusively.

Germany is reviewing many counter terrorism measures as it prepares to host the 2006 World Cup games this summer.

Big Mama Loses Suit Against Southwest Airlines

A 300 lb. woman who sued Southwest Airlines because the airline asked her to buy a second seat due to her girth, has lost her case.

Nadine Thompson, a woman of color, was removed from a Southwest flight in 2003 when she refused to pay for an additional seat. The airline has a rule that if a passenger encroaches on the area of a second seat, then the passenger must purchase an additional fare. Thompson refused and was escorted off of the plane.

Thompson alleged that the airline did not inform her of the policy prior to boarding and mentioned that she was able to take a United Airlines flight instead and had to pay for only one seat.

Ryanair Issues 3 Million "Freebie" Flights

Ryanair, in response to explosive allegations made by an Irish under cover media group, has announced that it will be giving away three million free tickets through the end of May. "Free" except passengers must pay taxes and airport charges.

As mentioned here recently, Ryanair has been stung by charges accusing the airline of lapse security practices, dirty aircraft, and crew abuse. Irish, French, and British authorities are looking into the charges according to published reports. Ryanair's special offer expires on Thursday, February 16th with select flights available beginning on February 21st and running through May 31st.
