Air Purifiers - Fact or Fiction?

What Is It?

In the last decade, air purifiers have become increasingly more popular with many segments of the population. But, why are they more popular? What exactly is their purpose? We all know that the air we breathe is becoming more and more polluted, with the air inside our homes and offices being some of the worst. Not only do we suffer from increasing pollution, many also struggle from the effects of allergens. If there is really something that can clean the air we breathe to make it safer, shouldnt we at least take a look at it? Air purifiers are sworn by, by some people and sworn at by others. They disagree over their effectiveness and their necessity.

Why Do People Use Them?

While virtually everyone agrees that we have an issue with pollution not everyone agrees with the use of purifiers. Pollution advisories and alerts are almost as common as traffic alerts during certain times of the year. One of the most common reasons that people purchase air purifiers is to help them with respiratory problems. They may have asthma, emphysema, allergies, chronic bronchitis, or any one of the many other respiratory illnesses. In order to alleviate, or at least to limit exposure to pollution or allergens these individuals get a purifier to clean the air so that they can have a better quality of life.

Are There Problems?

The problem that most people have with air purifiers is that they say they do not work and are simply a placebo to those who use them. They say that the effects that some users report are just hopeful wishes not based on facts. There have not been a lot of studies on the effectiveness of air purifiers, but it is known that they dont do much for removing mold, dust mites, pet dander, and some serious pollutants. Some ozone generators which are touted as a healthier version, actually emit ozone which is harmful to the body. These types of air purifiers should never be used.

How Are They Helpful?

Those who use purifiers regularly to help with their respiratory problems are very eager to let you know how much they have been helped They feel that their lives are better, fuller, and longer than if they had not gotten the purifier-especially those who have problems with severe allergies, etc. Whether or not air purifiers do the job, these individuals feel that they are doing better with them.

Ask Your Doctor

One thing that you can do before you purchase a purifier is to talk to your doctor and see if they think you will benefit from it. You can also research the different types of air purifiers online, or in consumer magazines to see which, if any perform the job that you would need them to.

What Else Can I Do?

For those who decide against a purifier, but would still like to make the air in their home cleaner and safer to breathe, there are things that you can do. Close all of the doors and windows and seal any leaks or cracks. Change the filter on your central air unit regularly and use the filters that are designed to trap pollutants, allergens and contaminants. Vacuum frequently, even the furniture, especially if you live in a dusty area or have pets. Use mattress covers and pillow covers that protect your bedding from dust mites. You can do simple things to make your home air cleaner.
